Smartlead vs Instantly: Which Cold Email Tool in 2026?

By MailToolFinder Team · · Updated · 8 min read

Smartlead and Instantly both advertise unlimited email accounts and unlimited warmup, so their feature lists look almost the same. The pricing is where they split. Smartlead puts lead allowances and contact storage on one plan ladder. Instantly sells sending, lead data and AI agents as separate subscriptions, then sells bundles of them. Compare entry prices alone and you will probably compare the wrong things.

All prices are monthly-billing list prices, checked on both vendors’ pricing pages on 5 October 2026.

The Short Version

Smartlead is built for agencies. Plans scale by monthly sends and verified prospect emails, every plan includes unlimited mailboxes and warmup, and the two top plans add unlimited contact storage. Client workspaces with white-labelling cost $29 per month each and are available from the Pro plan up; Unlimited Prime includes three. Over 2026 it has added SmartAgents, the SmartDialer calling add-on, an MCP server and a command-line tool. The tradeoffs: the interface is the harder of the two to learn (our ease-of-use score is 4.1 out of 5), the company only dates from 2022, and calling, inbox placement testing and dedicated servers all cost extra.

Smartlead

Cold email infrastructure with white-label client workspaces

4.6/5

Smartlead is a cold email infrastructure platform built for agencies and high-volume senders, offering unlimited email accounts and warmup on every plan starting at $39/month....

From $39/mo Verified Oct 5, 2026

Instantly is built around volume plus an in-house lead database of 450M+ B2B contacts. Its Outreach plans also come with unlimited email accounts and warmup. The lead database and the AI agents run on a separate Instantly Credits subscription. That modularity suits a solo founder, but a team can overspend without noticing. The catch is that a full setup costs well above the $47 entry price, and the pricing page shows bundles, Outreach plans and Credits plans side by side, so it takes some effort to work out what you are buying.

Pricing: Two Different Ladders

Smartlead’s pricing page lists four plans:

Plan Monthly price Sends per month Verified prospect emails Contact storage
Base $39 6,000 2,000 ($59/month add-on) 2,000
Pro $94 90,000 30,000 ($59/month add-on) 30,000
Unlimited Smart $174 150,000 50,000 (included) Unlimited
Unlimited Prime $379 500,000 170,000 (included) Unlimited

Annual billing takes 17% off. On Base and Pro the verified prospect emails are a $59-a-month add-on; the two Unlimited plans include them. Smartlead launched this plan structure on 15 January 2026, adding unlimited contact storage and bundling verified leads into the plans.

Instantly’s pricing page splits sending from data. The Outreach plans:

Plan Monthly price Emails per month Uploaded contacts
Growth $47 5,000 1,000
Hypergrowth $97 125,000 25,000
Light Speed $358 500,000 100,000

Lead searches, enrichment and the AI agents draw on Instantly Credits, a separate subscription. It starts at $9 per month for 150 credits, and $47 a month buys 1,500 credits. Instantly also sells bundles that pair an Outreach plan with credits: Starter at $94, Scale at $194 and Agency at $555 per month.

Suppose you send 100,000 emails a month. Instantly Hypergrowth at $97 covers it, but caps uploaded contacts at 25,000. Smartlead Pro tops out at 90,000 sends, so you would need Unlimited Smart at $174, which comes with unlimited contact storage and 50,000 verified prospect emails a month. Instantly is cheaper on sending alone. Once you add lead data, the gap closes: Scale, Instantly’s sending-plus-credits bundle at that volume, costs $194.

Lead Data

Instantly’s biggest selling point is its built-in lead database: 450M+ B2B contacts with filters and waterfall email enrichment, paid for with Credits. If you have no lead source today, Instantly gives you one, at extra cost.

Smartlead’s lead data works differently. Its SmartProspect lead finder comes as a monthly allowance of verified prospect emails (2,000 on Base, up to 170,000 on Unlimited Prime). The allowance is a $59-a-month add-on on Base and Pro and included on the two Unlimited plans, and Smartlead says each three emails you send earn one verified prospect email. Smartlead doesn’t publish a database size, so we can’t compare coverage against Instantly’s 450M figure. Teams with their own lists won’t notice a difference. Teams that prospect inside the tool should test both on their actual target market during the trials.

Mailboxes and Warmup

Neither tool charges per mailbox, and in cold email that is usually the biggest cost lever. If you run ten domains with three mailboxes each, per-inbox pricing elsewhere would eat most of your budget. On both of these tools that cost is zero.

Smartlead sorts warmup into pool tiers. On 20 January 2026 it started showing which warmup pool each account is in and whether the account qualifies for the Premium or Ultra Premium pools. On the pricing page, Base sits in the Foundation tier, Pro in the Growth tier, and the two Unlimited plans in the Premium pool, eligible for Ultra Premium.

Instantly includes unlimited warmup on every Outreach plan. Its SISR system (server and IP sharding and rotation), which assigns dedicated server and IP blocks, comes only with Light Speed.

Warmup can’t fix bad setup. Neither tool will save you if SPF, DKIM and DMARC are missing, and neither can rescue a burned domain. Our email authentication guide covers the records you need.

Agency Features

Smartlead is ahead for agencies. White-labelling is a $29-per-client add-on: each client gets a separate workspace and the platform carries your brand. Client workspaces can be added from the Pro plan up, and Unlimited Prime includes three. An agency can work out what eight clients will cost straight from the pricing page.

The catch is that the cost grows with every client. At $29 each, ten clients add $290 a month on top of the plan. If you run many small clients, check that the margin still works.

Instantly’s pricing lists no per-client workspace or white-label line item. Its pitch to agencies is volume and setup speed instead: done-for-you email accounts and domains, plus the $555 Agency bundle, which combines Light Speed sending with 10,000 credits a month. If keeping clients separate is central to how you work, Smartlead’s model fits better.

AI Agents, MCP and Calling

Both vendors now sell AI-run outreach and both can be driven from AI assistants, but they package it differently.

Smartlead’s timeline this year:

  • 9 February 2026: SmartAgents, AI operators that run email and LinkedIn outreach, handle follow-ups and keep the CRM in sync.
  • 24 February 2026: SmartDialer, calling with transcripts and automatic CRM updates. It is a paid add-on.
  • 18 March 2026: Smartlead CLI v0.1.0, for managing campaigns and leads from the terminal. It is still an early version.
  • 27 March 2026: a setup guide for its MCP server, which gives Claude 116+ tools and is free with any paid plan.

SmartAssistant, Smartlead’s in-app AI assistant, is included on every plan. LinkedIn steps come through an Aimfox integration, which Smartlead announced on 27 January 2026.

Instantly’s AI Sales Agent, AI Reply Agent and lead-finding agents all run on Credits, so their real cost depends on usage. For developers, Instantly offers an API, an MCP server, an SDK and a CLI. API access comes with every Outreach plan, and webhooks start at Hypergrowth.

We’d treat AI features as a second-year question. A tool that sends reliably and keeps your domains healthy matters more than an agent that writes follow-ups.

Ease of Use and Support

Our editorial ratings put Instantly at 4.8 and Smartlead at 4.6 overall. Ease of use is where they differ most: 4.4 for Instantly and 4.1 for Smartlead, which is Smartlead’s lowest sub-score. Smartlead has shipped features quickly, and in our Smartlead review we note that the interface hasn’t kept up, so settings can be hard to find. Both tools score 5 out of 5 on support in our data.

Instantly is quicker to pick up when you are running a handful of accounts. Our Instantly review found that the learning curve starts shallow and gets steeper at agency scale, especially once you manage rotation across dozens of mailboxes.

Both are email-first. Smartlead reaches LinkedIn through SmartAgents and Aimfox, and phone through SmartDialer. If LinkedIn and calling need to be equal channels in one sequence builder, look at lemlist, which we compare in Lemlist vs Instantly.

Sending Limits and Deliverability Habits

Treat plan caps as ceilings to stay well under. A Smartlead Pro account can send 90,000 emails a month and an Instantly Hypergrowth account 125,000, but a single mailbox carrying that load will end up in spam. Spread the volume across many mailboxes and keep each one to a few dozen sends a day.

Three habits matter more than which tool you pick:

  1. Verify every list before you upload it. Bounces damage a domain faster than warmup can repair it. Both vendors sell verification: Smartlead as credit packs, Instantly at 0.25 credits per email.
  2. Warm up each new mailbox for at least two weeks before it sends real campaigns.
  3. Pause a mailbox as soon as its reply rate collapses or its bounces spike, and rest the domain. Don’t push through.

Both platforms can automate parts of this, but neither does the thinking for you. A cheaper tool still costs more if it burns two domains a quarter.

Switching Between the Two

Switching is manageable because both tools connect to your own Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 mailboxes. You reconnect the accounts, export your lead lists as CSV and rebuild your sequences by hand. Domain and mailbox reputation belongs to your domains, so it comes with you. Campaign history and analytics stay behind in the old tool, so export what you need first. Run a small test campaign before you move a client’s full list.

Who Should Choose Smartlead

Smartlead fits if you:

  • Run cold email for several clients and need white-labelled workspaces
  • Want unlimited contact storage and verified prospect emails on the same plan
  • Send 150,000 or more emails a month and want the cost of each plan level spelled out up front
  • Want to run your outreach from Claude through MCP or a command line

The downsides: it is harder to learn, it is a younger company, and calling, inbox placement testing and dedicated servers are priced separately.

Who Should Choose Instantly

Instantly fits if you:

  • Are a solo founder or small team that wants to get set up quickly
  • Need a large prospecting database from the same vendor you send with
  • Send around 100,000 emails a month and don’t need more than 25,000 uploaded contacts
  • Would rather pay only for the modules you use

The downsides: a full setup costs well above the entry price, the plan names are hard to compare, and there is no per-client workspace pricing for agencies.

Our Verdict

Agencies and high-volume teams that already have their own lead data get better value from Smartlead. White-labelled workspaces, unlimited contact storage, verified prospect emails and premium warmup pools are all part of one plan ladder. Founders and small teams who want lead data and sending in one place with little setup will find Instantly easier to start with, and our overall rating for it is higher. Just price out Credits before you commit.

The deciding question is usually whether you manage multiple clients. If you do, pick Smartlead. If you run one brand and want one login for data and sending, pick Instantly.
